What is your directory about?
By admin | July 30, 2008
Way too many times I have visited many directory sites that don’t say what one can find in the directory; or it does so in a too vague form. I think this lack of identification discourages visitors and advertisers.
When a visitor or potential client lands on any page of your directory, can they tell what is your directory about? Can they tell what geographical area and/or industry it covers? Can they do that with a quick glance?
I believe that a directory should say in the header in a clear and compelling manner what is their focus and whatever it is, you must say it with your logo and/or tag line.
Your header should say what your directory is about and not only your main page. People land in your directory from search engines and may go to a listing or to any one page.
Most directories cover a region or and industry or an industry in a given region. If you cover the world, say it so.
You should have one sentence that defines your directory and you should use it in any promotional material you send out.
Having a focus and announcing it will help with repeat visitors and will help getting advertisers.
